Olive is the surplus-store green that works with almost every outdoor layer you own. Here it's midweight wool felt shaped by a western teardrop crease, the crown reaching 4 1/8 in and the brim 3 1/2 in, left without a band so the color carries it. You adjust the sweatband with velcro, and the hat comes in SM, MD and LG. Pair it with khaki, brown leather and a waxed field jacket on a cold Saturday.

Walt's tip: Felt is a cool-weather material. When summer heat arrives, store it crown-down in a closet.

Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart.
