What is a bucket hat?
A soft hat with a round crown and a downward-sloping brim all the way around. Wikipedia traces it to Irish farmers and fishermen, who wore wool felt or tweed versions to shed rain, and says it was introduced around 1900. Today most are cotton, denim or canvas. In Italy it's called a fisherman's hat, which tells you where it's happiest.
How do you wear a bucket hat?
Straight and pulled down so the brim sits just above your eyebrows, not perched on the back of your head. It's casual by nature, so pair it with T-shirts, linen shirts, denim or a swimsuit cover-up. A neutral bucket goes with everything. A bold one is the outfit, so keep the rest quiet.
How do you wash a bucket hat?
Check the care label first. Most cotton bucket hats take a gentle hand wash in cool water with a little mild detergent. Rinse, press the water out with a towel, never wring it, then dry it over a bowl or a balled-up towel so the crown keeps its round shape. Skip the dryer.
How should a bucket hat fit?
Snug around the crown with no pressure line, sitting low enough that the brim shades your eyes. A bucket that sits high on your head looks small and blows away. Does a bucket hat give good sun protection?

What is the difference between a bucket hat and a fishing hat?
Mostly marketing. A fishing hat is often a bucket with a wider brim, vents, a chin cord or snap-up sides. The shape is the same family. If you'll be on the water, look for the chin cord and a brim of three inches or more; if it's for the city, a plain bucket does the job.

The short answer

A bucket hat is a soft hat with a rounded crown and a brim that slopes down all the way around. The classic version, worn by Irish farmers and fishermen around 1900, had a narrow brim.
