Women's Straw Hats
A straw hat turns a basic outfit into a whole plan. Beach, brunch, festival, wedding: there's a shape for each, and none of them are complicated.

How do I pack a straw hat?
Match the shape to the plan. A wide brim sun hat for the beach, pool or garden. A straw cowgirl hat for festivals, rodeos and country shows. A straw fedora or Panama for city days and summer weddings. For real shade, pick a brim of three inches or more with a tight weave, and keep the outfit simple so the hat does the talking.
One hat per plan
- Beach, pool, garden: a wide brim sun hat.
- Festival, rodeo, country show: a straw cowgirl hat.
- City day, brunch, summer wedding: a straw fedora, a Panama or a boater.
- Hiking or boating: an outback or wide brim with a chin cord.
In our feed, women’s straw hats are mostly sun hats, with straw cowgirl hats and fedoras next. That’s a good sign for anyone who mainly wants shade.
Which straw
Genuine Panama is the fine, light one, woven in Ecuador. Toyo looks smooth and polished for less. Paper braid is light and easy, and it’s where most packable hats live. Palm and seagrass have more texture and suit western styles. The material line in each listing tells you which you’re getting.
Shade check
For real sun protection, the brim matters more than the brand. MD Anderson suggests two to three inches of brim all around and a weave you can’t see light through. A cute open-weave hat is a style piece; wear sunscreen under it.
Styling, quickly
Straw is texture, so keep the rest smooth: linen, cotton, denim. White and natural straws go with everything. Black straw looks chic and a little dramatic, and it runs warmer in the sun. Match the hatband to your bag or your shoes.
What’s the best straw boater hat?
A boater has a flat top, a flat stiff brim and usually a ribbon band, and it’s the most vintage-looking straw hat you can wear to a garden party. Our launch store doesn’t list a boater right now, so we won’t point you at a stand-in and call it one. If you shop elsewhere, look for a firm, tight weave so the flat brim holds its line, and your measured size, because a boater sits on top of the head and shows a bad fit fast. For a similar dressy summer look in stock today, try a straw fedora or a Panama hat.
