Newsboy and Ivy Caps questions
What is the difference between a newsboy cap and a flat cap?
What is a newsboy cap?
How do you wear a newsboy cap?
How should a newsboy cap fit?
Is an ivy cap the same as a flat cap?
How do you clean a wool newsboy cap?
A newsboy cap has a full, round crown built from eight panels with a button on top and a short stiff peak. An ivy cap, also called a flat cap, is slimmer and slopes forward over the peak. Both are cool-weather caps, so wool felt, wool blends and leather are the usual picks. Size them like a fitted hat: measure just above your ears.
Newsboy, ivy, flat or driving cap?
Four names, two shapes. The newsboy is the full, round one: eight panels, a button on top, a short stiff peak. The ivy cap, which the British call a flat cap and some call a driving cap, is the slim one. It has a smooth top that slopes forward over the peak and sits closer to the head. If you like a little volume, newsboy. If you want it tidy and close, ivy.
Which material should you pick?
Wool felt and wool blends are the cold-weather standard: warm, a little water-shy, and good with coats. Leather caps cut the wind and handle drizzle better, and they get better with scuffs. Lighter wool-polyester blends work in spring and fall. American Hat Makers’ caps on this page are mostly wool felt ivy caps, with a few leather and blend options.
Who looks good in a newsboy cap?
More people than you’d think. A fuller newsboy adds width up top, which balances a long or narrow face. A slim ivy cap suits a round face and keeps the profile clean. If you have a heart-shaped face, the face shapes guide suggests a newsboy or ivy cap as a first try. Height matters less with caps than with tall hats, since the crown sits close.
How do you get the size right?
Measure where the band sits, just above the tops of your ears and about an inch above your brows, and match it on the size chart. Most caps here come in MD, LG and XL. A cap that’s a size too small rides up and pops off when you turn your head. A size too big slides down over your eyebrows. For a brimmed hat with the same city feel, see fedoras.
