The ivy cap has been a working man's hat on both sides of the Atlantic for generations, and it still earns its place. The Jace in black is wool felt with a flat crown and a 2 in bill. An inner drawstring sweatband lets you tighten the fit. It is imported. Felt is the cooler-weather choice, so this is a hat for frosty commutes, football Saturdays and a long walk with the dog in November.

Walt's tip: Snug the drawstring so the cap sits level, about a finger above the eyebrows, and doesn't ride up in the wind.

Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. MD fits heads 22 to 22 3/4 in (56 to 57 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Is the Jace enough for sun?
Not on its own. A cap or peak shades your eyes but leaves your ears and neck exposed, as MD Anderson points out. Add sunscreen, or pick a brimmed hat for long days outside.
