Wide Brim Straw Hats
The wider the brim, the less you'll squint, and the more strangers will ask where you got it. Both are fine.

For real shade, get a brim of at least three inches all the way around and a weave tight enough that light doesn't shine through. A wide brim covers your face, ears and the back of your neck far better than a cap. Look for a listing that states a UPF rating if sun protection is the goal, and a chin cord if you'll be near wind or water.
How much brim you actually need
Three inches all the way around is the sensible minimum for sun. That covers your face, the tops of your ears and much of your neck. Past four inches, you’re buying style and drama as much as shade, which is a perfectly good reason.
Watch the shape, too. A brim that turns down keeps sun off your neck and ears. A brim that flips up looks great and shades less.
Weave matters as much as width
Hold the hat up to a window. If you see pinpricks of light everywhere, sunlight gets through those holes too. MD Anderson points out that many straw hats have gaps like that. A tighter weave, or a listing that states UPF, gives you more protection. Sunscreen still goes on.
Picking the straw
Toyo and paper braid are light and comfortable for long days. Palm is sturdier for work. Genuine Panama is beautiful and better kept for occasions than for weeding. If you’ll travel, filter for packable hats, which only show that label when the store says so.
Keeping the brim flat
Wide brims are the first to warp. Store the hat on its crown or on a hook. Keep it out of hot cars and away from heaters. If it has a wire in the brim, you can reshape it any time you like.
