Our take · Researched, not tested

Black bucket, flipped-up brim, the easiest outfit math of the week.

By Jessica Reyes, women's hats desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

A black cotton bucket is the hat version of a great black tee: it goes with everything and asks for nothing. This one gets extra personality from a brim that turns up at the edge, 3 3/4 in wide, over a 4 in crown. No trim, no sweatband, just cotton, in one size. Outfit formula: this hat, a striped tee, denim cutoffs and white sneakers. Farmers market, beach walk, coffee run. It's imported.

Jessica's tip: If it gets damp, let it air dry on its crown instead of near a heater so the brim keeps its upturn.

Questions

What size is the Sausalito?

The store lists it as one size, which it describes as one size fits most. If you measure at either end of the size chart, a fitted hat in your size may sit better. A foam insert can take up a little room.

Is the Sausalito UPF rated?

The listing doesn't state a UPF rating, so don't assume one. The 3 3/4 inch brim still gives real shade. Hold it up to a bright light: if light shows through, so does UV.

Does it pack flat?

The store doesn't list it as packable, so don't fold it. Folding can leave a permanent crease. Wear it when you travel, or set it crown down in the overhead bin.

Can you wash the Sausalito?

Check the care label on the store page first. Most fabric hats take a gentle hand wash in cool water and air drying on a bowl or balled towel so the crown keeps its shape. Skip the dryer.

Can you return it?

Per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026, it offers 90-day easy returns. Policies change, so confirm on the store's page before you order.

Do you sell this hat?

No. American Hat Makers sells it. The store button opens their product page, and we earn a commission if you buy, at no cost to you.
