Unbanded black felt is about as plain as a hat gets, and that's the appeal. Wear it bare for a clean, modern look, or add a band later to suit the season. Underneath, the Rancher is midweight wool felt with a teardrop western crown standing 4 1/8 in and a 3 1/2 in brim, generous for a fedora. The velcro sweatband adjusts. Sizes SM through XL, imported. Felt is a cooler-weather hat, so think of this as your October to March companion.

Walt's tip: Brush black felt counterclockwise with a soft brush before each wear. Lint loves a dark hat.

Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart.
