An unbanded hat is a starting point. This brown Rancher hands you midweight wool felt, a western teardrop crease pinched to 4 1/8 in high and a brim measuring 3 1/2 in, then leaves the trim up to you. A leather band works on brown, so does a feather, and so does nothing at all. Velcro inside the sweatband lets you adjust, and sizing runs from SM to XL. It pairs with tweed jackets, waxed cotton and good boots.

Walt's tip: Rest it on its crown, never the brim, and keep it out of a hot car. Felt that's been baked in a truck rarely looks the same again.

How should it fit?
Level on your head, about a finger above your eyebrows, clearing the tops of your ears. Sizes in stock run SM to XL. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, size up and add an insert.
