Black reads villain. Brown reads sailor who has seen a few storms and lived to tell it, which is often the better story. This Cavalier comes in brown heavyweight cowhide and skips the hatband entirely, leaving a plain, rugged surface. You get a 4 1/2 in brim and a tall 5 in crown, plus a Velcro sweatband for adjusting the fit. It is assembled in the USA. Brown also plays well with linen shirts, sashes and scuffed boots, so a deckhand or privateer costume comes together quickly.

Walt's tip: Brown leather picks up a little character with handling, so keep a dry cloth nearby and wipe it down after a dusty day instead of scrubbing it.
