Our take · Researched, not tested

Walnut brown sun hat for the garden, the trail and the dog walk.

Painted portrait of Margo Lane
By Margo Lane, straw and sun hats desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

Medium brown is the color for anything that involves soil. The walnut Cabana is a covered sun hat built from polyester and fabric with mesh. Height is 3 3/4 in at the crown, and the brim extends 2 3/4 in. AHM lists a 50 sun protection rating and says it resists water. A fabric band with a badge finishes it, and a velcro sizer adjusts the fit. It comes in SM through 3X and is assembled in the USA.

Margo's tip: Hang it on a hook by the back door. A sun hat you can grab on the way out is a sun hat you'll actually wear.

Questions

Which size of the Cabana should I get?
Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. 3X fits heads 25 to 25 5/8 in (64 to 65 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, American Hat Makers says to size up and use the foam insert it includes.
Is the Cabana UPF rated?
Yes. The store lists a UPF 50 rating. The Skin Cancer Foundation says UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays. Sunscreen still goes on the bits the brim misses.
Can you travel with the Cabana?
Wear it on travel days. It isn't listed as packable, so it shouldn't go folded in a suitcase. On a plane, set it crown down in the overhead bin with nothing on top.
Can you wash the Cabana?
Check the care label on the store page first. Most fabric hats take a gentle hand wash in cool water and air drying on a bowl or balled towel so the crown keeps its shape. Skip the dryer.
What if it doesn't fit?
American Hat Makers states 90-day easy returns (per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026). Check the store's current policy before you buy; its page is the final word.
