Our take · Researched, not tested

Charcoal felt for snowy weekends and cozy cabin trips.

Painted portrait of Margo Lane
By Margo Lane, straw and sun hats desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

Charcoal wool felt is softer than black and plays beautifully with snow-day whites and heathered grays. The women's Pathfinder in this color has an outback crown 4 in high, a brim of 3 in, and a faux leather band whose tails hang loose. There's an adjustable velcro sweatband inside, and it comes in MD, LG and XL. Take it to a cabin weekend or a holiday market.

Margo's tip: If snow lands on it, brush it off before it melts and let the hat dry naturally on its crown.

Questions

Which size of the Pathfinder should I get?
Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. MD fits heads 22 to 22 3/4 in (56 to 57 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. XL fits heads 23 5/8 to 24 1/4 in (60 to 61 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, American Hat Makers says to size up and use the foam insert it includes.
Is the Pathfinder UPF rated?
The listing doesn't state a UPF rating, so don't assume one. The 3 inch brim still gives real shade. Hold it up to a bright light: if light shows through, so does UV.
Can you travel with the Pathfinder?
Wear it on travel days. It isn't listed as packable, so it shouldn't go folded in a suitcase. For a checked bag, use a hat box with the crown stuffed.
How do you care for a felt hat like this?
A soft brush after dusty days, a rest on its crown, and no hot cars. If it gets rained on, shake it off, turn the sweatband down and let it air-dry at room temperature.
What if it doesn't fit?
American Hat Makers states 90-day easy returns (per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026). Check the store's current policy before you buy; its page is the final word.
