Our take · Researched, not tested

Brown leather top hat. Plain on purpose, and better for it.

By Walt Mercer, felt, fit and care desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

Brown leather softens the top hat's formal reputation and gives it a frontier feel. The El Dorado in brown is 100% cowhide with a 4 1/2 in crown and a 2 in brim, left unbanded so the leather does the talking. Fit adjusts with an AHM Velcro sweatband, and it is assembled in the USA. It works for an Old West saloon costume, a renaissance fair, or a riding coat and boots on a cool evening.

Walt's tip: Do This, Not That: wipe brown leather with a dry soft cloth. Don't reach for household cleaners, which can strip the finish.

Questions

How should it fit?

Level on your head, about a finger above your eyebrows, clearing the tops of your ears. Sizes in stock run SM to 3X. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, size up and add an insert.

When would you wear the El Dorado?

Leather top hats suit festivals, Renaissance fairs, steampunk events and costume nights more than white-tie galas. Wear it level, and take it off indoors at the table.

Does it pack flat?

The store doesn't list it as packable, so don't fold it. Folding can leave a permanent crease. Wear it when you travel, or set it crown down in the overhead bin.

How do you care for a leather hat like the El Dorado?

Wipe it with a soft, barely damp cloth and let it dry away from heat, which can stiffen and crack leather. A leather conditioner keeps it supple; test it inside the crown first. Never machine-wash it.

Can you return it?

Per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026, it offers 90-day easy returns. Policies change, so confirm on the store's page before you order.

Do you sell this hat?

No. American Hat Makers sells it. The store button opens their product page, and we earn a commission if you buy, at no cost to you.
