Our take · Researched, not tested

Khaki crushable felt, the color of every good field jacket.

By Margo Lane, straw and sun hats desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

Khaki looks right with canvas, olive and denim, which describes most of what people wear on a cool morning outside. This Base Camp is wool felt in khaki, crushable and listed as packable, with a teardrop crown 4 in high and a 3 1/2 in brim. The sweatband is adjustable velcro so you can fine-tune the fit. Sizes are S/M and L/XL. It's imported.

Margo's tip: Light felt shows dust sooner. Give it a quick brush counterclockwise after each outing.

Questions

Which size of the Base Camp should I get?

It comes in S/M and L/XL. S/M fits heads 22 1/8 to 22 3/4 in on American Hat Makers' chart. L/XL fits heads 22 7/8 to 23 5/8 in on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, size up and use an insert.

Is the Base Camp UPF rated?

The listing doesn't state a UPF rating, so don't assume one. The 3 1/2 inch brim still gives real shade. Hold it up to a bright light: if light shows through, so does UV.

Can you pack the Base Camp?

Yes. The store lists it as packable or crushable. Pack it crown down at the top of your bag with the crown stuffed with socks, then reshape the brim with your hands when you arrive.

How do you clean the Base Camp?

Brush felt with a soft hat brush, counterclockwise, and lift lint with a barely damp cloth or a lint roller. Keep it away from heat, which can shrink felt, and store it on its crown so the brim keeps its shape.

Can you return it?

Per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026, it offers 90-day easy returns. Policies change, so confirm on the store's page before you order.

Do you sell this hat?

No. American Hat Makers sells it. The store button opens their product page, and we earn a commission if you buy, at no cost to you.
