Red fine straw with a teardrop crown, made for poolside lunches.

By Margo Lane, straw and sun hats desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

A red sun hat is a small act of confidence, and it works with stripes, white linen and gold sandals. The women's Horseshoe Bay is 100% toyo fine straw with a 4 in teardrop crown and a 3 1/2 in brim. Its band is two braided cords, and an AHM Velcro sweatband sets the fit. It is imported in S/M. Wear it to a poolside lunch or a summer market.

Margo's tip: Match the red to a lip or a bag, and keep everything else simple.

Questions

Which size of the Horseshoe Bay should I get?

It comes in S/M. S/M fits heads 22 1/8 to 22 3/4 in on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, size up and use an insert.

Is the Horseshoe Bay UPF rated?

The listing doesn't state a UPF rating, so don't assume one. The 3 1/2 inch brim still gives real shade. Hold it up to a bright light: if light shows through, so does UV.

Does it pack flat?

The store doesn't list it as packable, so don't fold it. Folding straw cracks the weave. Wear it when you travel, or set it crown down in the overhead bin.

How do you clean the Horseshoe Bay?

Brush off dust with a soft brush and dab marks with a barely damp cloth. American Hat Makers suggests cornstarch for sweat or grease spots, brushed off after it sits. Never soak straw, and let it dry on its crown.

Can you return it?

Per American Hat Makers, as stated on their site Nov 6, 2026, it offers 90-day easy returns. Policies change, so confirm on the store's page before you order.

Do you sell this hat?

No. American Hat Makers sells it. The store button opens their product page, and we earn a commission if you buy, at no cost to you.
