Our take · Researched, not tested

A crowned skull in matte black, for hats with a little mischief.

By Walt Mercer, felt, fit and care desk Pen name, fact-checked by our team

Skull ornaments have a long run on biker and costume hats, and this one adds a crown for good measure. It is a small pin finished in matte black, held in place by a backing magnet, so it attaches to a hat or clothing without poking through. That makes it easy to swap between a leather top hat on Saturday and a denim jacket on Sunday.

Walt's tip: Matte black disappears on a black hat. It shows up best on brown, gray or a light band.
