Real Panama hats come from Ecuador, and this one says so right in the name. The Manta is genuine Panama brisa, shaped as an outback with a 4 1/4 in crown and a 2 3/4 in brim, which keeps it compact for city streets and travel days. A braided jute band circles the crown, and the velcro sweatband adjusts. Straw is your summer friend, and a natural shade goes with linen, khaki and white. Currently in SM.

Margo's tip: Panama straw doesn't like being crushed or soaked. Carry it by the brim and let it dry naturally if it catches rain.

Which size of the Manta should I get?

Measure your head where the hat sits and match it to the chart. SM fits heads 21 to 21 7/8 in (54 to 55 cm) on American Hat Makers' chart. Between sizes, American Hat Makers says to size up and use the foam insert it includes.

Is the Manta UPF rated?

Yes. The store lists a UPF 50 rating. The Skin Cancer Foundation says UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays. Sunscreen still goes on the bits the brim misses.

Can you travel with the Manta?

Wear it on travel days. It isn't listed as packable, so it shouldn't go folded in a suitcase. On a plane, set it crown down in the overhead bin with nothing on top.

Can this straw hat get wet?

A light shower is fine; a soaking can loosen the weave and the shape. If it gets wet, reshape it with your hands and let it dry at room temperature, crown down, away from heat.
